Employee Spotlight: Heather Campbell, Global Quality Engineer

Meet Heather Campbell, a valued member of our Funai Solutions team.

In this spotlight, we get to know Heather both inside and outside of work, from her key role in Global Quality to her interests and hobbies.

Learn more about her journey, accomplishments, and what drives her daily at Funai!

1. Tell us a little about your role at Funai.
I am a Global Quality Engineer who focuses on R&D and Manufacturing. My work involves aligning the company's quality lifecycle among our multiple business locations. I’m currently developing a quality program initially focused on ISO9001 compliance with a secondary phase to expand into FDA(21CFR820).

2. Are there any accomplishments or projects you’re particularly proud of?
Recently, we’ve centralized our customer technical support utilizing custom software. In another role, I’ve been the author/co-author of over ten academic peer-reviewed papers, and now I have the privilege of acting as a reviewer for pharmaceutical journals. Other achievements include:

·      Lean Six Sigma Green Belt

·      Fundamentals of Engineering Certification(NCEES)

·      Good Documentation Practices Certification

·      Measurement System Analysis Certification

3. What’s your educational background, and how did it lead you to your current role?
I have a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Kentucky with an emphasis on Pharmaceutical Engineering. My undergraduate degree is in Mechanical Engineering, but a mentor introduced me to the world of pharmaceuticals during this time, which resulted in a pivot that changed my whole career.

4. What hobbies or interests are you passionate about outside of work?
I’m a judge for the First Lego League. The Lego League is a STEM-based competition where kids are supplied with robotic kits and a list of objectives. Teams then design and build robots to navigate a list of challenges. Besides Legos, I also like woodworking, although I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like.

5. What’s something most people might not know about you?
I hold a formulation patent for a molecule with an intended use case as a therapeutic adjunct treatment for type II diabetes.  I recently learned that a new patent featuring the formulation process enabling traits for creating this molecule is in the works. This new process will lower the manufacturing cost of the diabetic treatment.

6. What longer-term goals are you hoping to achieve?
To implement FDA-compliant manufacturing environments with phase-appropriate GMP development at all Funai Microfluidic Solutions facilities!

7. How has your time at Funai helped you grow, both professionally and personally?
Being a lean organization, I get to see many aspects of quality. I wear many hats, giving me a more holistic view of how each activity can affect other processes. This has expanded my skills in many quality functions that weren’t originally on my radar.

8. If you could have dinner with anyone, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Einstein, due to his contributions to the scientific community. But as a big fan of thermodynamics, I would also love to pick the brains of Josiah Gibbs and Ludwig Boltzmann for their achievements in developing statistical thermodynamics.

9. What’s your go-to motto or piece of advice that keeps you motivated?
Contentment is the enemy of improvement.

10. Lastly, what are you looking forward to most in the upcoming months at Funai?
The quality unit, in its current form, was created in our Lexington, KY facility last year. I will travel to our manufacturing facility in Cebu,Philippines, to align quality units with a global roadmap and strategy. Because we focus on implementing FDA and ISO9001 standards throughout our product lifecycle,I will play a pivotal role in defining this program. The international travel adds to the fun of doing my job!
